Website with and without WWW. makes a difference

I bet many of us who surfs the net frequently might skip typing ‘www.’ for any website and straight away key in the domain that we are looking for (e.g. google.com.sg instead of www.google.com.sg).  It saves time and it is very specific and somehow, of common sense that it should redirect google.com.sg to www.google.com.sg and vice versa because this is how we, the geeks surf the net.

The web hosting company, Net Venture, apparently neglected the importance of DNS or maybe, they forgot to modify the DNS entries accordingly and thus led to loss suffered by the actual company, Comfort DelGro Bus.  Can you imagine the amount of traffic going into the website looking for chartered buses but ended up in the website of Net Venture webhosting company?  And if that the users are not geeks and the website seems redundant to them, they would have left the website and never ever come back again.

Going to Bangkok

Now back to the topic, I’m going to Bangkok this weekend! HIP HIP HURRAY!

I didn’t want to be rushing like cats and dogs over there, thus I told my sister to plan the itinerary (which I had to contribute as well based on my 2 previous trips over there).  Jetstar and WhitePalaceHotel costs us a total of around SGD1500, for 5 persons.  Pretty worth it; I could have gotten a cheaper Jetstar Package (only $200!) but I was only 1 day late, it increased to like $280!  My god.  White Palace Hotel was something out of the norm, I really had no idea what hotel to book but the good hotels (5stars) are all about SGD100/night. what a ripoff.  This can be saved, obviously.

So with my help, me and my sis decided that these places are a MUST to go:

  • Platinum Mall
  • Pratunam
  • MBK (Im not really into it, forums say the price is overrated)
  • Chatuchak a.k.a JJ Market (1.1km square area of shopping)
  • Bobae Tower & Market
  • Temple Visiting (the folks wants to =/)

If you’re going to Bangkok too, let me warn you, Patpong is not a place to go.  The price is 10x the original market.

YES! I AM DEPARTING THIS SATURDAY! (and I’ve got tons of work on hand, unsubmitted!)

Tips for blogging

Yes, precisely.. with so much work to be completed in this semester, so I haven’t been sitting down faithfully infront of my computer to manage all my photos for this semester and blog about them whereas Pinky has done most of it and putting them available on her facebook.  I’m grateful for her efficiency =)  And thanks to facebook for lifting the limit of 60photos per album to 200photos.. Now thats what we call…. ‘SHIOK’

Then I was telling her about the photos, our blogs should just hotlink the photos from our facebook so that we don’t have to waste our webhosting space.  The webhosting space for our domain is soley for content, database and some emails!  See, the problem with bloggers is that we have tons of photos (mostly) and since we’re not using any free blog provider such as blogspot and livejournal, we will 1 day run out of webspace and require bigger webhosting space, thus might increase my cost.  This is a non-profitable blog, its just a platform for us to communicate with our friends and relatives, maybe potential customers/advertisers but theres no need to increase our expenses.  Even if eventually we run out of webspace, we can delete the former pictures but the former blog entries will be there and broken links will start popping out and thats something we can stop, if we plan our expansion well. LOL!

Thus if you’re a blogger or if you want to start your blog, remember to host your photos seperately from your webhosting account!  I.e. unless you own the whole server!

Miss Singapore, Ris Low Resigns

Been famous for the past few months for her poor command of English and had her interview on youtube with more than 200,000 views, this Miss Ris Low (aka) Miss Singapore Universe 2009 was in no way low profile.

Seriously, I won’t even care who won the Miss Singapore title until the youtube URL came into my MSN by my friends for mocking at her english and singlish, BOOMZ.  Pronouncing prints as preens, STEEL studying etc.  And I think if she had enough grooming for her competition, she should not just walk/behave like a model, but TALK like a model.

A bigger news hit her when she was charged for credit card fraud and they intend not to let the media know.  When you try to hide something and people find out, it will only create more trouble and woes.

And my friend even found her name on Wikipedia now.  She’s globally known!  If not for the competition, she could have gotten her conviction without anyone knowing.

Goodbye JCRC, Hello CEC

This is probably the last 21st JCRC photo ever.  I wonder if we will be in the group again but it really looks like we’re not going to.  SOBZ..

(Im the only one with orange hair now.)  Full of reluctance to give my position away to the new committee but as the Chinese saying goes, ‘without the old ones going off, the new ones can’t go in‘.  The reasons why I choose not to be elected again because I find that the commitment for the club is really over demanding.  Staying back in Hall during holidays was fun but at same time, its more of a wasting time.  Designing for 3newsletters and 1 Magazine, helping some committees to take their photos for free and etc.  All these COSTS.  I have got 5years of Publicity and Publication Experience ever since Polytechnic year 1.  I know my skills are overrated for this position already and I should move on to something more challenging.  Another bad thing is that the freshmen this year seems very sporty and enthusiastic.  I’ve a huge age barrier with them, thus I decided to join the school club, CEC with my clique of buddies.

(our grooming done at bugis)  Oh, the makeup artist wacked on my face tanned foundation, really TANNED.  NB.  Make me look so dark!  Anyway, my decision for joining CEC was because it is a new role and it requires more communication skill!  Now I have a sub-committee of 5members and I hope they would work well under me =)

Reminiscencing

I visit upon my alma mater facebook fan page and came upon this video someone uploaded on his youtube:

Watching the video really made me teared.  This is a sort of farewell video done by my fellow school mates (I supposed?)  And yea, I remember back in 2002 we don’t have a cameraphone yet? Did we?  Else we would have tons of mischievous photos too!

Looking back at the video, I saw myself in that green uniform, a period when I wanted to give up studying so much until my friends encouraged me and pulled me back.  We mugged at late nights striving to do better in N and O levels.  Then got into the Polytechnic, and then some got to the workforce while some continued to study.

I’m really feeling proud, now.

Unrecognised Efforts

So, a few months ago came a web design customer who was desperately looking for web masters to help design his website and he wanted the website very urgently, say like 1 week due.  Any project managers will tell you in the face that the 1 week might be too rush for any testing to start and ofcourse I did told him that and he was fine with it.

Then he took out his design for his website and preferred his way of design; A splash page on the front, with his logo/banner half of the users screen etc.  As a good designer, we all know that we should design website on the user’s point of view but since he wanted his way (which will cause negative effect to customers), I decided to do his way.  And since the design was really in a madrush and he wanted a blog engine, I’ve got no alternatives but to use the famous existing engine, WordPress.

Ever since the website got running, he didn’t use the blog engine; he find it too complicated to be using etc, he didn’t like the design, he don’t really know how ‘blogging’ works?  Whatever.  My job as a web designer stands firm since he asked for the things he dont really wanted.

First of all, he didn’t seek consultation.
Secondly,  he came up with an unjustified design.
Thirdly, he had a very last minute deadline.
Fourthly, I think he doesn’t understand the blogging concept.

He wanted the blogging concept so that he could post the latest collections of clothes on his website and it didn’t occur to him, in the first place, who’s going to maintain the blog for him.  Your truly couldn’t handle this maintainance of blog because look at my blog!  I don’t even blog at a frequent basis!

Then he changed his company’s web design (without informing me, yes) He has the right to do so ofcourse, but its business etiquette.  If you don’t like the person’s service and wants to change, don’t go through another web designer and tell me to switch the domain over, its very very rude IMO.  Give me a call, say you have different requirement now and you’ve engaged another web designer, then need my help.  I’ll be most willing to help because my job’s over and regardless of this I will claim your webhosting fee because thats what we have agreed, verbally.

The sick thing about this is we don’t have a black/white agreement.  I might not be able to receive the payment; Unrecognised Effort.

Personal Finance and such

So, if you think you’re alittle too old to start planning your personal finance or too young to do so, you’re WRONG.  Its not age restricted, as long as you think that you want to grow your money instead of letting it out.

A recent talk that I had went to with @mintyboi in School regarding your finance and controlling it makes us realise that it might be something of common sense but we seem to always take those for granted..  Thus Im here to share alittle bit of what the School’s Investment club has taught us that day:

Your money should be divided properly into 3 baskets; SSI (Spending, Saving and Investment).  These 3 names has got something to do with our finance!

Spending, is a basket that leaks.  Put a limit there or else your finance will leak out non-stop.
Saving, is a basket that saves you when you need help (like a piggybank), only use when neccessary.
Investment, is a basket that helps you to grow your money so that your money can be saved from inflation and things like that..

The investment club, however, did not really provide a good stand on our side as a student.  They mentioned more about shares and taking risks than protecting assets.

I like their 3 basket theory, but at the same time, I think there should be a basket for Insurance so that it can help us out when we need the money (e.g. Hospitalisation, Illness, Accidents).  These may not be neccessary for students but I took up this insurance thingy because as our age gets older, we need to get protected from all these!  I feel that an insurance can be an investment if “touchwood” you did kena something bad.

I am trying to plan my own finance now and I wanted to do that ever since I was 16 BUT the thing is the temptations of indulgence are hard to resist!  Indulgence such as eating good food or going for buffets, enjoying tea breaks, playing and singing with friends.

No wonder my finance are all in the leaking basket!

GAGA in Singapore

My sister has been so eager to watch Lady Gaga perform thus we bought her tickets in early July:

Actual day:

Damn massive crowd.  Poor crowd control and ventilation by LAMCproductions

No doubt, thats me and my sister:

Warm up act by DJ Inquisitive and Beatboxer Dharni:

This is their performance in Mediacorp channel 5’s Live and Loaded show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRQR935IaFw

And this is Dharni performing in zouk:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZXctI6bbZI&feature=related

I seriously dont understand why are there so many mofos who think that the opening act was lousy.  Maybe the songs was not a really right choice for some BUT Gees they shouldn’t criticise others when they cant do it la seriously.. I will be speechless if they got up the stage to proof that they’re better..  So what even if you’re better?  If you’re an audience, be an audience and let the performer do his job..  Theres always someone better down the stage, we all performers know that.. No matter what, I believe there are always people who can do better down the stage but they know that they should respect the performers.

Lady Gaga Concert Opening:

And towards the end:

Lady GAGA said: “Be yourself and follow your dreams.  If some one stops you from doing so, tell them Lady Gaga told them to FUCK OFF!!”  And when someone tell her to Fuck Off instead, she sings to them… POKER FACE!

Of insurance and investments

Recently, I suddenly have the urge to join this insurance/investment scheme. We all have to accept the fact that we will die some day and Insurance isn’t just for our ownselves, but for our family members who may not be able to afford the medical fees or sustainability of their own life after our departure. We are adults and we should be equally responsible.

Thus, I did ask afew friends (who are agents) to recommend me afew plans so that I could do my planning for my finance for the next few years. My reason for not been able to commit to sign with them is because Im still drawing pocket money from my dad (who is the only breadwinner in the family) with his unstable business. Another reason is because I need to understand what Im buying because it will be a financial lockdown if I bought the wrong thing. 1 good example I read from a blogger ahkiat is that 1 of his customer bought an ILP (investment linked policy) for about 2 years and wants to withdraw after seeing that the funds she bought has raised up above her expectation BUT, something she did not realise was there is a penalty fee if you withdraw within 10years of the contract, which is to surrender the 90% of the fund, thus she will only have 10% back.. She’s making a big loss even if she did earn some at the funds. And ofcourse, not all ILPs are crap, you have to know what you want based on your time horizon.

ILP (investment linked policy) consists of 2 things, Investment and term insurance. If you want to find out more, read here. I wont say anymore further because Im not a trained finance adviser, but what I would say is that if you want your money to work for you, you really have to decide whether you want to take some risk to gain higher returns rather than a stable low return.

And some of the websites I read recommended:
– Investment is investment, don’t get it together with insurance. It can be cheaper in long term but how long is your time horizon?

– Life Insurance is to provide security and finance to your loved ones should anything happen to you. Be responsible.

– Upgrade your health shield, don’t get bind down by the limitations from the default garment insurance. Your hospitalization/medical fee is more costly than death, we have to admit it.

Last but not least, dont buy something from your agent just because he’s your friend.. buy things that are practical and useful to you! He will be drawing commission from you and you are the one who will be keeping him alive in future if you sign with him, so be realistic.
